Crash Performance - NCHRP 350 Test Levels 3 Barrier

The BarrierGate combines the attributes of a crashworthy barrier and an automated gate in one unit. When closed, the BarrierGate is a positive, crashworthy, longitudinal barrier that meets the strict requirements of the National Cooperative Highway Research Program Report 350 (NCHRP 350). The strong latching mechanism prevents vehicles from penetrating through the barrier even when impacted at its midpoint where the two halves of the gate latch together.

The BarrierGate is constructed of two gate half assemblies, a pin side and a hook side which join at the center of the barrier opening to form a continuous longitudinal barrier. The gate halves lock at the center of the installation to form a continuous positive barrier which resists design speed impacts. The gate halves unlock and open to provide a nominal 12.8 m (42 feet) wide opening.

The gate is available in both a manually operated model and an electrically powered model. The manually operated model is equipped with a manual jack that operates the lock holding the two gate halves together. The manual open and close movements are accomplished via a capstan drive system located in the pin side steel enclosure assembly. Movement is accomplished by a manual hand crank through a two speed chain and sprocket reduction with a manual.

The electrically powered model is equipped with an electrical control system which provides electrically powered locking/unlocking and opening/closing gate movements. The control system operates on a 240 VAC 50 AMP, single phase incoming power supply (supplied by others).

The BarrierGate can be used for median cross-overs, HOV lanes, reversible lanes or anywhere a barrier opening is needed. This system provides a wide range of benefits to all departments that use the roadway system.
